One of the greatest Christian apologists was an Anglican scholar named William Paley. Paley argued against the deists of his day, claiming that divine revelation for the existence of God was as valid an argument as their appeals to logic and reason. His book A View of the Evidences of Christianity was required reading for all students attending Cambridge where he taught philosophy and Greek. He himself was a graduate of Christ’s College at Cambridge (pictured). William Paley died on May 25, 1805, and his portrait now ironically hangs a few feet from Christ’s College’s most famous alumnus, Charles Darwin.
