Uncle Tom’s Cabin is undoubtedly one of the most politically and socially impactful novels of the 19th century. Written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, it was first published as a serial in a magazine called The National Era on June 5, 1851. Stowe was a devout Christian who felt that the transformative nature of Christ’s love could move people to call for the abolition of slavery. She was right. By 1852, the serials had been published as a novel and demand was so high that nearly 250,000 copies were distributed.
