Every believer is called to answer the Great Commission given by Jesus in Matthew 28:19-20. For Irene Ferrel, her response to that call was sacrificing her comfort in America and becoming a missionary in the Belgian Congo. However, at the time that Ferrel left the United States, the Congo was breaking away from Belgium’s colonial rule through a horrible coup. Despite this, Ferrel and a fellow graduate from the Fundamental Bible Institute in Los Angeles developed schools in the Belgian Congo. On January 25, 1964, a band of guerrilla raiders came to Ferrel’s village and shot and killed her. Her friend escaped.
