January 18, 1460 – Pope Pius II issues Execrabilis

Under his papal bull “Execrabilis” issued on January 18, 1460, Pope Pius II decreed that his decisions could not be appealed to any council or other governing body. Not only did this prohibit appeals of his decisions, but it deemed anyone who tried to do so “detestable.” Even with this enforcement of his authority, those who disagreed with Pope Pius II could not earn substantial support to overturn his rulings in the first place. The picture included here is a picture of Pius II’s grave at Saint Andrew’s Basilica in Rome.
