Lew Wallace lived perhaps one of the most impressive lives of the late 19th century. He held several prestigious titles including New Mexico territorial governor, Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, Union Army General, and he was also one of the military judges at the trial of President Lincoln’s assassins. Additionally, he is the author of Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ, which has been called “the most influential book of the 19th century.” After a life of great success, he died in Crawfordsville, Indiana, on February 15, 1905.
