While Judeo-Christian history has been marred by acts of fallible men, one of the darkest times in Christian history was the Spanish Inquisition. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella attempted to force their citizens to be Christians, and if they were deemed to be insincere in their faith, they were subjected to torture. Priest Tomas de Torquemada was the chief torturer, and on February 11, 1482, he was appointed to the post of “inquisitioner” by Pope Sixtus IV at Ferdinand and Isabella’s request.
