December 15, 1870 – Colored Methodist Episcopal Church Formed

After the American Civil War former enslaved African Americans who worshipped in the Methodist church felt it was best to form their own church, With the blessing and support of the Methodist leadership, the former slaves met on December 15, 1870 in Jackson, TN to form the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1954 they would drop the name “Colored” and replace it with “Christian”. This is a picture of the marker in Jackson, TN noting where the Mother Liberty fist church was formed.
