One of the stronger popes in Roman Catholic history, Pope Nicholas I, was consecrated on April 24, 858. Similar to King Henry VIII, King Lothair desired an annulment of his marriage from the Pope. King of Alsace-Lorraine between France and Germany, Lothair wanted to marry his mistress, and Pope Nicholas I held strong and dissolved a church council that attempted to grant the divorce. Pope Nicholas was the first to emphasize that the Pope had the ultimate authority in all church matters.
