April 20, 1529 – Second Diet of Speyer Begins

Protestantism began with Martin Luther earnestly urging church members to break away from the Roman Catholic Church in 1517. However, Protestantism was not officially acknowledged until the Second Diet of Speyer that began on April 20, 1529. “Diet” is a Latin term that means a meeting of religious leader to establish a doctrine. When this Diet occured at Speyer in Germany (pictured), the reforms issued a “Protestatio,” where the term “Protestantism” has derived from.
