Augustine is acknowledged as one of the greatest theologians in Christian history. He thought critically about how the church should operate, and he was the first to articulate the doctrine of predestination. He also held the belief that parts of Apocrypra were Scripture and that church tradition was equally as valuable as Scripture, a position the Roman Catholic Church still holds today. He was finally baptized on April 17, 387. He consistently remembered his depravity before meeting Christ, and this greatly influenced the development of his doctrine.
